The Free Webinar Will Take Place on Friday, September 6 at 12 p.m. EST
On Friday, September 6 from 12-1 p.m., the Center for Dairy Excellence will host a monthly “Protecting Your Profits” webinar titled “Top 3 Farm Safety Risks and How to Keep Everyone Safe.” Dr. Florence Becot from Penn State University will dive into what daily responsibilities on the farm have the highest risk. From animal handling and manure application to horizontal silos and working with heavy machinery, dairy farmers are exposed to a large amount of risk on a daily basis. Dr. Becot will share what specific farm safety risks to be aware of and how to take simple precautions to avoid tragedy.
“While most dairy farmers accept the risk involved in the profession and enjoy working with their hands, farm safety should still be a top priority on dairy operations to help protect families and employees,” said Valerie Mason-Faith, Risk Education Manager at the Center. “As we approach the fall harvest season, join us on September 6 for an insightful discussion on the top three farm safety risks – and how we can be proactive with simple precautions that could save a life.”
Florence Becot is the Nationwide Insurance Early Career Professor of Agricultural Safety and Health in the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. She oversees research, extension and academic programs in safety and health related to the agricultural and the biorenewable industries. Her current projects examine farm families’ access to health care, health insurance and childcare; mental health supports for the agricultural sector; and the safety implications of automation in the dairy sector. Becot received her doctoral degree in environment and natural resources, with a specialization in rural sociology, from The Ohio State University; a master’s degree in community development and applied economics from the University of Vermont; and a bachelor’s degree in economics and social sciences from the University of Rennes 1 in France. She joined Penn State with more than 12 years of experience from her time as an associate research scientist at the National Farm Medicine Center and as a research specialist at the University of Vermont Center for Rural Studies.
The Center for Dairy Excellence recently revamped its “Protecting Your Profits’ monthly webinar series. Each month, a different guest speaker will be invited to explore various topics and share real-time data, trends, and insight related to dairy markets and risk management.
“I thought last month’s webinar topic was very interesting and relevant. I appreciated the speaker’s insight towards the futures markets, both on the market side and input side. Getting facts and figures is one thing, but getting information as to why the futures markets are doing what they are doing was great,” said Dan Smith of DairyOne. “Sometimes we just barrel through our day with our head down trying to get done what needs to be done, but we don’t look around to see what might be going on in other parts of the country or even in the world. The webinar helped me understand things better and maybe I can help a customer understand it better.”
To join the discussion in a format that is most convenient for you on September 6, the Center will host it in a webinar, podcast, and conference call format. There is no cost to participate in the ‘Protecting Your Profits’ discussion, and no registration is necessary.
