January: Know the Signs of Depression

Look for signs of stress and depression due to sustained low milk prices as we enter winter months. Financial stress takes a toll as many dairy farmers borrow their way to a workable cash flow. In addition, we’re entering winter months where days are shorter and less daylight exposure. Be on the lookout for signs of depression and stress with family members and with neighboring farmers: abrupt changes in routine, mood, behavior and appearance, and “cries for help” (signs of suicidal intent or thinking). If you suspect someone is at high risk, urge them to seek help, call the police or a suicide hotline or take them to the emergency room.
